Reflections ProgramIn this working conference, we will bring together human rights theorists, philosophers, psychologists and political and social scientists in an effort to explore the concept of human dignity from a variety of perspectives. Our overall purpose is to examine the meaning of the concept of human dignity; to examine how human dignity may be linked to the unique ontological status of human beings; how efforts to promote and protect human dignity serve to advance the interests of humanity as a species; and how human moral and spiritual aspirations animate concern for human dignity at the level of personal relationships, relationships among and between ethnic and cultural groups and among and between nations.

This special symposium features eight distinguished speakers, including the three Peace Chairs at the University of Maryland:

  1. Dr. Hoda Mahmoudi, Baha'i Chair for World Peace
  2. Dr. Shibley Telhami, Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development
  3. Dr. Suheil Bushrui, Lisa and George Zakhem Kahlil Gibran Chair for Values and Peace

  • Dr. Jack Donnelly, the world’s foremost authority on human rights and human dignity
  • Dr. Michael Penn, professor of psychology and chair of the psychology department at Franklin & Marshall and co-author of Overcoming Violence Against Women and Girls: The International Campaign to Eradicate a Worldwide Problem
